Environmental Department Responsibilities
- All recycling efforts, information, and reports regarding recycling;
- Community organizing regarding environmental issues and environmental education;
- Applying for and reporting on grants that the town has been awarded for projects such as Recreational Open Space Inventories, Community Stewardship Incentive Program, community garden and food waste opportunities;
- Introducing Secaucus energy initiatives including; energy audits & upgrades, fleet inventories, electric vehicle charging stations, municipal energy aggregation, residential solar access, and participating in Hudson County’s microgrid pilot program.
- Serving as Secaucus’ liaison to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as well as other state environmental agencies;
- Enforcing any environmentally-related laws enacted by the State of NJ or the Town of Secaucus;
- Ensure continued re-certification with Sustainable Jersey;
- Work with Secaucus Environmental Committee on various environmental campaigns;
- Partnering with Secaucus schools and Shade Tree Committee for the annual Arbor Day Celebration.
- Coordinating with the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) regarding mobile shredding and hazardous waste days for Secaucus;
Environmental Department Services
The services that the Environmental Department provides:
- Planning of our annual Green Summer Festival, Environmental Camp, Summer Speaker Series, Earth Day activities as well as additional environmental events throughout the year;
- Supervision of four Secaucus community gardens and plot assignment;
- Management of Secaucus pollinator program including the care of our wildflower meadows, butterfly gardens and beehives – subsequent sale of local honey produced by our hives to fund the program;
- Organization of various volunteer opportunities for residents;
- Bi-Annual publication of Green Times newsletter;
- Outreach to Secaucus business community to encourage community service activities and to participate in our Green Business Certification program;
- Outreach to Secaucus restaurant community to reinforce Secaucus’ ban on Styrofoam and enrollment in our Green Restaurant Certification program;
- Promotion of Secaucus Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program;
- Administration of Secaucus’ Arbor Day Tree Appreciation donation campaign to increase the tree canopy in Secaucus;
- Maintenance and collection of Big Green Box battery and small electronics recycling program.
